Twelve years ago while working as a juvenile detention officer, I struck up a conversation with a resident who was awaiting transportation for placement. This young man had no family support to speak of and had no future to look forward to. But he had a really nice pair of shoes, of which he was particularly proud. Knowing how much his shoes meant to him, I commented that his shoes looked comfortable. I was taken back, surprised and humbled when he said "You can have them if you want." I couldn't believe he was willing to give me one of the last things that truly meant something to him. He taught me something that day that I will remember for the rest of my life -- my relationships with the world around me is significantly more important than the possessions I hold dear.
This painting shows two individuals in all their majesty. A real king and queen sharing a teachable moment.
